I was honoured to be invited to participate in a collection of vignettes, The Vine Leaves Literary Journal by Vine Leaves Press. The anthology arrived this week and what a beauty it is too. It would make a fabulous gift – there’s still time for Christmas!
Vignettes have become a largely forgotten literary form. Back in 2011 Jessica Bell and Dawn Ius created the Journal to give the vignette greater exposure and prominence. This new book is the final celebratory instalment of the Vine Leaves Literary Journal after six years.
Why vignettes? Jessica Bell in her introduction to the book says:
“Too many of us, in this day and age of admiring success and fame a little too much, miss out on the moments in life which make it what it is – worth living. I believe the vignette forces you to look at those moments. It forces you to slow down, to distract your focus from the future to the present, to admire the beauty in the world around us, even when on the surface it may seem ugly. The vignette gives a voice to the world that passes us by becaue we are too focussed on the world that os not yet in our reach.
There are over five hundred vignettes in the beautifully illustrated book, from writers across the globe. That makes it perfect to dip in and out of, to savour one of these small extracts – like an amuse bouche, before trying another. The range of contributors is enormous – a kaleidoscopic mix of forms and styles from artists and poets to other novelists, including fellow historical novelists Lorna Fergusson, Liza Perrat, Jean Gill, Laura Morelli and Alison Morton, contemporary novelists Carol Cooper and Helena Halme, literary novelists Roz Morris and Rohan Quine and crime writer JJ Marsh. My own contribution was based on a brief description from my second novel, Kurinji Flowers.
There’s still time to grab a copy of this gorgeous limited edition hardback collection for Christmas – but hurry. Info from Vine Leaves
