U Blog IconWhen I first visited Kerala in India and got the idea for my second novel KURINJI FLOWERS, I met an elephant called Uddi. I did these little watercolour sketches of him, Small Picture of an elephantwhile sheltering under a tin roof from the pouring rain.

When I came to write the book, I decided to borrow the names of Uddi and his keeper, Thankappan, for minor characters. I’m not even entirely sure Uddi is a proper name – but I really liked it for the character in question, who is a bearer – a kind of butler to one of the characters.
